Fabulous Salmon Fishing in North Yorkshire
April 8, 2015
Various Dates The Blue Lion in Wensleydale offers fabulous fishing breaks that are great value for money. Close to The Blue Lion, the River Ure is one of North Yorkshire’s best kept secrets as a premier salmon river, meandering through the iconic rolling hills of Wensleydale in the stunning Yorkshire Dales and providing the perfect location for all standards of fishermen. During the last few years, some of the biggest salmon caught in the British Isles came from the River Ure with many fish exceeding 20lb in weight. There are some lovely deep holding pools, tempting runs and glides and, as our beat hasn't been fished for salmon for many years, it offers incredible potential – all at a fraction of the cost of fishing Scottish rivers. Enjoy a day’s fishing on our private beat, combined with dinner, bed and breakfast in our quintessential 18th century English coaching inn; with its exposed beams, relaxing atmosphere, sumptuous food, fine wines and real ale. Cost: single occupancy from £129, twin/double occupancy from £175 (one rod); additional rods available from £40 per day. Lunchtime picnics can be arranged on request and are charged separately. The fishing season runs from 6th April to 31st October. Expert tuition and/or a Ghillie for the day can also be arranged, but needs to be booked in advance. Please call 01969 624273 or email enquiries@thebluelion.co.uk to make a booking This package is subject to availability; rods are not available to non-residents; visit www.uresalmon.org.uk for latest river conditions and fishing prospects. Shibden Mill Inn crowned Les Routiers Inn of the Year 2015
January 23, 2015
We're delighted to announce that our Great Inn,  Shibden Mill Inn, Halifax has won Les Routiers 'Inn of the Year' award for 2015. . It is the second time in four years that the 350 year old AA 5 Star, 2 Rosette inn, owned by Great Inns of Britain chair, Simon Heaton, has been awarded the title. Simon comments: "We're really delighted to have won back the crown of Les Routiers Inn of the Year for 2015. It's a prestigious title, with a growing number of really high quality contenders each year. We've put a huge amount of hard work and dedication into the inn over the last 12 months, and since achieving AA 5 star inn status in July 2014, the inn moves from strength to strength." "We're particularly proud of our menu, which makes great use of locally sourced produce and the freshest seasonal ingredients, which are increasingly being harvested from our own vegetable and herb garden here at the inn. Our eleven guest rooms are as unique as they are cosy, having recently undergone an extensive round of redesign and refurbishment, a perfect place to retreat to after an evening of great food by the roaring fire." The historic property is rich with character and rustic charm and a firm favourite with locals and food-lovers across the region. An ongoing investment and a commitment to quality ensures Shibden Mill presents a true taste of the region and serves-up fabulous Yorkshire hospitality to all who choose to relax under the beamed ceiling of the bar, enjoy a little al fresco dining alongside the flowing water of Red Beck or relax and slumber in one of the inn’s eleven individually-styled, luxury guest rooms. Launching at the end of this month and new for 2015 is the Shibden Mill Grill Room. Situated upstairs, the newly styled Grill Room presents forty covers and a fine selection of quality Yorkshire meats, fish and seafood, serving connoisseur wines by both the glass and bottle. Produce of the Shibden Valley, the surrounding area and region is the focus of the Grill Room, which is set to be an absolute treat for Shibden diners. Speaking on behalf of Les Routiers, Tina Griffiths said: “The Annual Awards highlight establishments that consistently meet and exceed our membership standards. For 2015 competition has been fierce with some extremely strong contenders; however Shibden Mill Inn is a very deserved winner. We extend our warmest congratulations and commend Simon and his team for being ‘best in their class’!”

Malt of the Month
September 5, 2014
Malt of the Month September - Glenfiddich 15 Year Old From The Wild Boar For the September Malt of the Month at The Wild Boar, George Hutton is taking us on a tour of Speyside for a Whisky that he has have come to love. I visited Glenfiddich distillery back in the mid 80’s as Secretary of a social club back home in Airdrie, but did not really enjoy whisky at this point, having had a bad experience with blended whiskies on a night out with friends. On the day I visited we tried a selection of drams, including the 12 year, 15 year and 18 year. I remember that I liked the 15 year old over the others. I have since tried this dram on many occasions and still prefer this to the 12 year or 18 year. The 15 year Glenfiddich has now become a staple bottle in my drinks cabinet at home. It is my go to dram when I just want a quiet drink at home, watching TV or reading a book. This is a nice dram to sit back and relax with friends, letting the world pass you by as if you didn’t have a care in the world. Glenfiddich is also a firm favourite of the rest of the team here at The Wild Boar, where we stock a many varieties in the Glenfiddich range. However, it is the 15 year whisky that features as my malt of the month for September. Glenfiddich 15 Year Old (Solera) A single malt Scotch whisky aged in European, American and New American oak – for a careful release of virgin cask flavours. Mellowed in our first of a kind Solera Vat, and finally married in Portuguese oak tuns. Tradition and innovation gives this whisky great depth and consistency. An expression layered with intriguing aromas and bursting with flavours. The first 15 Year Old to enter the top ten best selling single malts in the world. Tasting Notes COLOUR: Golden, with a red hue NOSE: An intriguingly complex aroma. Sweet heather honey and vanilla fudge combined with rich dark fruits. PALATE: Silky smooth, revealing layers of sherry oak, marzipan, cinnamon and ginger. Full-bodied and bursting with flavour. FINISH: Satisfyingly rich with lingering sweetness. Malt of the Month - August
July 31, 2014
Malt of the Month, The Wild Boar's Master of Malt, George Hutton, introduces us to the single malt..  that is bottled only when the Master Blender feels the flavour has reached its peak - the Glenrothes Select Reserve On 28th December 1879, two momentous things happened in Scotland. The new rail bridge over the River Tay collapsed, plunging an unfortunate train into the icy waters and killing all 75 passengers. That very same day, the first pure spirit flowed from the stills at The Glenrothes distillery, a ray of sunshine on an otherwise dark day. A very welcoming dram, matured in European oak sherry casks. The whisky is only bottled when the ‘Master Blender’ feels that the flavour is right, therefore Glenrothes Select Reserve has no age statement. The Glenrothes Single Malt is the main malt whisky constituent of some of the best blended whiskies in the world including ‘The Famous Grouse’. The Glenrothes Select Reserve Tasting Notes NOSE: Lots of zesty rich fruit on the nose. Thick Seville marmalade, bubbling on a hot stove with notes of toasted cereals. PALATE: The palate is silken smooth and utterly supple. Gentle barley whispers sweet nothings to the honey. A little vanilla and malt with toasted cereal and sumptuous oak. FINISH: The finish is long with mocchaccino and barley sweetness. Click here for the next Whisky Night at The Wild Boar.

The Victoria Inn at Holkham joins The Great Inns of Britain
March 15, 2014
The Great Inns of Britain is delighted to announce that The Victoria Inn at Holkham has become a member of this long-established collection of independently owned country and coastal inns. 'This ten-room inn boasts refined, comfortable accommodation, first-rate food and a great location near to the beach … the verdict - nine out of ten' Tom Chesshyre, The Cool Hotel Guide, The Times, 29/03/14 Situated at the  gateway to Holkham Park and the National Nature Reserve, just a few minutes’ walk from Holkham beach on the North Norfolk coast, The Victoria Inn reopened in May last year, following a total refurbishment programme. This classic English Inn is owned and run by the Holkham Estate home to the Earls of Leicester and Coke family.  Holkham has been a leading agricultural estate since the 1800s when Thomas William Coke bought the site and the young Queen Victoria elevated him to the peerage in recognition of his contribution to farming in 1837. When the inn opened its doors the following year the name must have been inevitable - and it has remained to this day. Ben Hunter-Watts, General Manager of The Victoria Inn commented: “Following a major refurbishment programme in early 2013, The Victoria has been restored to a traditional country Inn. This led to us being approached by Jeanne Whittome, widow of Paul Whittome, the co-founder of The Great Inns of Britain and former proprietor of the esteemed Hoste Arms in Burnham Market. Jeanne felt that the new look ‘Vic’ would be an excellent fit with the Great Inns portfolio and introduced us to the current chairman, Simon Heaton. We are delighted to have joined the association, membership of which is by invitation of the current members and we’re looking forward to working with the other Great Inns’ Inn Keepers to uphold the best traditions of the independent  British Inn amidst the proliferation of multiples and chain hotels.” Simon Heaton, Chair of The Great Inns of Britain commented: “With the Great Inns’ focus on independently owned properties run by Inn Keepers with a passionate belief in the values of traditional inn-keeping, The Victoria Inn is a perfect fit with our other members and a fantastic addition to  the Great Inns collection.” Each of The Vic’s 10 bedrooms, which are named after the shoot drives on the Holkham Estate, has a different colour theme and careful attention to design and detail delivers a blend of comfort and classic elegance.  Antique furniture is combined with essential modern comforts, with lovely big beds, crisp linen, luxury drapes and beautiful en-suite bathrooms. There is a ground floor bedroom with disabled access and this features a wet room for ease of use. The Inn has a small number of dog-friendly rooms and 3 kennels available for four-legged guests. The bright and airy dining area serves delicious, locally sourced food with many of the ingredients coming from the Holkham Estate and its tenant farmers.  Menus reflect the best of British cookery, taking inspiration from names such as Elizabeth David, Simon Hopkinson and Fergus Henderson, whilst the Inn’s proximity to the coast provides guests with a fantastic choice of fresh fish including seasonal favourites such as mussels and crab which are all caught locally.  In the summer months al-fresco dining is on offer in the courtyard and on the terrace, providing the perfect place to visit for lunch or supper. The Great Inns of Britain is a unique collection of independent country inns offering a winning recipe of fabulous food, gorgeous rooms and glorious locations. Membership of the Great Inns of Britain is by invitation only from the existing members.  The collection of independently owned Inns was first established in 1996 by Sir Thomas Ingilby, owner of The Boar’s Head in Ripley, North Yorkshire and the late Paul Whittome, former owner of The Hoste Arms at Burnham Market in Norfolk.
