Fishing Tips

Before you cast a line there’s a couple of fishing tips you need to be aware of.

Whilst many of our inns offer fishing equipment, you will have to have a fishing license to fish in the UK. You can buy a fishing license here: https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences.

Also, remember to take a look at the bylaws where you’re fishing. Many areas have rules on the size of the fish you can keep and the tackle you can use. You can find out about your local laws here: https://www.gov.uk/freshwater-rod-fishing-rules

Don’t forget to be aware of others whilst fishing and tidy up any litter- we want to keep the rivers clean for future generations!

The Inn at Whitewell

The Inn at Whitewell gives guests the opportunity to fly fish across the River Hodder, just a stone’s throw away from the inn.

They offer access to four rods for fishing on the river, perfect for trout, sea trout, and salmon during their respective seasons.

Spanning approximately seven miles of river, you can explore 14 pools and various intriguing runs.

The Rose and Crown

At the Rose and Crown, fly fishing enthusiasts have the option to explore local reservoirs or the renowned River Tees, perfect for those looking to dip their toes in the water.

Celebrated as one of the finest fishing spots in the country for wild trout and grayling, the area offers a remarkable variety of waters within short distances.

Whether you’re wading through soft riffles and glassy glides or navigating the rocky sections of the Upper Tees, you’re guaranteed an unforgettable experience.

The Peacock at Rowsley

The Peacock at Rowsley is the centerpiece of the Haddon Estate fisheries, offering exclusive residential fly fishing. Renowned for its extensive dry fly fishing for wild trout, the Derbyshire Wye attracts anglers from around the world.

It’s the only river in the UK that’s home to wild rainbow trout as well as wild brown trout.

One of the distinguishing features of the Derbyshire Wye Rainbow trout is that they spawn in the spring, rather than in the winter, like their American counterparts. They can be identified by their distinct and beautiful silvery skin, which has purple, pink and bluish streaks down its flanks.

Fishing in Whitby at the White Horse and Griffin

Whitby is famous for its rich sea fishing heritage, making it an ideal destination for chartering a boat for an angling trip.

The Tina Dawn, a traditional 10.6m wooden Whitby fishing boat, has ample space for up to 12 anglers and their equipment. She is available for 3-hour, 6-hour, or full-day trips. For more details, please inquire when booking.

For those interested in salmon and sea trout fishing (in season), the White Horse and Griffins can arrange trips on the River Esk at the nearby Egton Estate.
