October Events At The Great Inns

Looking to join in on the Halloween fun?

Guests at the White Horse and Griffin can get involved in Whitby’s Goth Weekend, celebrating gothic culture, music and fashion. The festival takes place biannually and is the ultimate nationwide gathering for all things dark and mysterious.

The Inn at Whitewell is a stone’s throw away from Pendall Hill, the home of the infamous Pendall witches. This October there’s a host of sorcery-themed events exploring the occult history of the site.

For those staying at The Boar’s Head, a visit to the nearby Mother Shipton’s cave is highly recommended. This Halloween, the legendary Yorkshire witch’s residence hosts a special celebration of all things witchy.

The White Horse And Griffin

Whitby is a town famous for its ghoulish inhabitants, with Dracula said to have stalked the streets alongside a whole host of ghosts and apparitions. The White Horse and Griffin is well situated in the town centre for ghost hunters looking for an encounter with the paranormal.

It is said if you venture up the 199 Whitby Abbey steps on a winter’s night and stand in St. Mary’s Church’s grounds, eerie sounds of horses may greet you.

Stay, and you might witness a ghostly horse-drawn carriage charging your way!

The Peacock At Rowsley

Nestled not far from The Peacock at Rowsley, Haddon Hall is where history and the supernatural converge!
It is said Haddon Hall harbours a medieval ghost that had a profound impact on a pivotal moment in early modern history.
During a stay here in the 16th century Prince Arthur, the older brother of Henry VIII, encountered a chilling apparition foretelling his death would come soon. Only a few months later Prince Arthur passed away, cursing the ghost that prophesied his downfall.

The Boar's Head

The Boar’s Head sits in the shadow of Ripley Castle, a 14th-century country house with a long history of war and intrigue, and it seems that some of its past occupants are still making their presence felt.

On Christmas Eve in 2014, two Georgian candlesticks at Ripley Castle went missing.

But owner Sir Thomas Ingilby had a sneaking suspicion that the mischievous poltergeist responsible would eventually return them.

He reported them missing in 2016 after extensive searches of the castle but in the summer of 2017, they were discovered on a shelf in the strong room, snugly nestled inside a bright red Christmas-themed carrier bag.

It’s not the first time objects have gone on mysterious adventures within these walls!

Shibden Mill Inn

The world-famous Shibden Hall is just a stone’s throw away from the Shibden Mill Inn.

Dating back to 1420, this West Yorkshire estate has a history steeped in mystery. By day, it’s a welcoming haven for history buffs, but as night falls, supposedly an eerie transformation takes place.

Legend has it that the spirits of Shibden Hall’s former residents linger in its shadowy halls, The Grey Lady… mysterious footsteps and ghostly voices are just a taste of the spine-tingling encounters you might experience.

From a hovering black mass to a phantom cat that appears day and night, many visitors tell hair-raising stories that defy explanation.

Pay Shibden Hall a visit if you dare!
