Ingredients for the salt dough:

  • 1 cupful of plain flour (about 250g)
  • Half a cup of table salt (about 125g)
  • Half a cup of water (about 125ml)

You will also need

  • Christmas shaped biscuit cutters
  • Decorations such as paints, glitter felt tips
  • Ribbon
  1. Combine the flour and salt in a bowl and slowly add the water in until it all comes together in a ball.
  2. Roll the salt dough out onto a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of about 5mm.
  3. Use the biscuit cutters to cut shapes from the dough or you can get creative and cut out your own shapes!
  4. Poke a hole into the top of each shape using a sharp pencil or pen. Choose the position carefully as the hole needs to be near the top of the design, but not so close to the edge that it breaks.
  5. Set your oven to its lowest heat. Put your shapes on a lined baking sheet and bake for 3 hours or until solid. Leave to cool completely.
  6. Once cool, paint and decorate how you would like. This is a great time to get everyone involved to create their own unique decorations for the tree!
  7. To finish loop the ribbon through the hole and tie at the top, ready to hang on the tree!
